Frequently Asked Questions
Will Treatment Hurt?
Generally, a chiropractic adjustment does not hurt – although there
may be some minor short-term discomfort which passes for most patients.
You will normally find that follow-up treatments are much more pleasant,
as your symptoms improve and you feel more at ease with your chiropractor.
Are There Any Risks?
Chiropractic has far fewer risks than many other treatments for your
problem. Serious side effects are extremely uncommon. Very rarely, manipulation
of the neck has been linked with strokes, although research shows that
chiropractic is one of the safest and most effective forms of treatment
available.
What’s Wrong With Painkillers?
Painkillers can dull your pain, but it may well return as they do not
necessarily deal with the cause. They may also have side effects. Unlike
chiropractic care, taking painkilling drugs cannot ever improve the
health of our joints, muscles, and nervous systems.
What If It’s Something Serious?
If your chiropractor feels that chiropractic treatment is not appropriate
for the cause of your problem, you will be referred to your GP or to
a suitable specialist.
What About Just Getting On With It And Ignoring The Problem?
This is usually not a good idea. If your body isn’t working properly,
you will continue to overload the injury, prolonging the healing process
and risking further problems as a result of your body compensating.
When your chiropractor has improved the movement and strength of your
joints and muscles, your injury will heal more quickly and be less likely
to come back.
Is It Bad To ‘Crack’ Your Own Joints A lot?
Doing this to yourself gives you relief for a while, but soon the urge
reappears. By repeatedly manipulating your own joints you may be making
mobile areas excessively mobile, which can create even more problems.
Chiropractic manipulation is better because it is more precise, which
will result in a more balanced spine and thus a better state of health.
Can Chiropractic Treatment Be Given During Pregnancy?
Yes. Your chiropractor will use safe, often gentle techniques that are
suitable for your condition. You may also be given advice on diet, posture
and exercise.
How Can Chiropractic Help Joints That Are Already Degenerated?
Degenerated joints are sometimes the result of the surrounding joints
not doing their fair share of work, so that the load is not managed
equally. Chiropractic aims to restore your normal joint function spreading
the load and taking excessive strain away from degenerated joints. Your
chiropractor can also give you advice on exercise for maintaining joint
function.
Can Chiropractors Help Osteoporosis?
Your chiropractor will be able to use various modified treatment methods
to cater for someone with osteoporosis as well as advise on other available
treatments. Chiropractic helps keep your joints mobile and improve your
balance and muscle tone to minimize the risk of falling.
Can Chiropractic Prevent Back Surgery?
In large number of cases the answer is “yes”.
Can A Person Who Has Had Back Surgery See A Chiropractor?
Yes. Many people who have had spinal surgery then suffer a return of
their symptoms months or years later. They then face the prospect of
additional surgery. Chiropractic may help prevent repeated operations.
I'm Feeling Better – What Now?
Like your chiropractor, some patients opt to continue with some type
of chiropractic checkups. This is because most joint dysfunction and
spinal nervous system interference is painless and thus without chiropractic
correction is left undetected. Chiropractic care aims to keep you ahead
of time and on a better track in life by taking care of the stresses
that our bodies encounter through daily life.
Can I Go To A Chiropractor If I’m Under Medical Care?
Yes. Receiving chiropractic care for your joints and nervous system
is important, no matter what other type of health care you are receiving.
Today, many chiropractors and medical doctors work together in clinics
and on joint research projects. Medical doctors are quite likely to
have patients who are under chiropractic care; in fact many medical
doctors see a chiropractor themselves.
